Team History

Founded by Kevin Smith, Puck U was more than just a team—it was a reflection of Smith’s irreverent, fun-loving spirit and his deep-rooted love for hockey. In 2009, Smith made a special journey from Los Angeles to Brantford, Ontario to take on a goalie role for Puck U in the Walter Gretzky Street Hockey Tournament, fulfilling his lifelong passion for the sport.

Smith’s connection to hockey traces back to his admiration for Wayne and Walter Gretzky, particularly Wayne’s era as a dominant force in the Edmonton Oilers dynasty. His participation in the tournament was his way of thanking Wayne and Walter for their impact on hockey culture, as well as supporting youth sports in Brantford, Wayne’s hometown.

As Smith once said:
“This is just my way of thanking Wayne and his greatest coach for the memories, the excitement, and the heart.”

Puck U wasn’t just a street hockey team—it was a celebrity-packed squad, featuring some of Kevin Smith’s closest friends and longtime collaborators. Over the years, the roster included:

  • Scott Mosier – Producer, writer, and Smith’s longtime creative partner.
  • Malcolm Ingram – Filmmaker and friend within the View Askew circle.
  • Ming Chen – View Askew web designer and co-host of I Sell Comics!.
  • Katie Morgan – Actress known for her work in Smith’s films.
  • Jim Jackman – Longtime friend and part of Smith’s creative world.
  • Walter FlanaganComic Book Men star and key figure in the View Askew universe.
  • Bryan Johnson – Filmmaker, podcaster, and another View Askew regular.

In 2010, Puck U secured their place in VASHL history by winning the Walter Gretzky Cup, marking their greatest competitive achievement. Their championship victory reinforced their status as one of the pioneering teams in the league, blending their irreverent spirit with championship-caliber gameplay.

Though no longer an active franchise, Puck U’s legacy remains strong, with their 2010 title standing as a testament to their lasting impact in VASHL’s early years.
