The SModawa Thirty-Seven’s, or 37’s, are an international street hockey team and a member club of the VASHL. The franchise was added as part of the 2016 expansion, alongside the Salsa Sharks and the Golgothans, adding another layer of creativity and fandom-driven competition to the league. The team name is a parody mashup combining three major influences from Kevin Smith’s world:
Dante Hicks: You said you only had sex with three different guys; you never mentioned him! Since their formation, the 37’s have brought their distinct energy and humor to the league, proving they’re more than just a clever name. Their blend of hockey skills and Kevin Smith fandom makes them one of the most unique franchises in VASHL history. Contents |

Team History
The SModawa Thirty-Seven’s were founded by Ryan Finn and longtime Vulgarian Keith Boardman, along with friends from Upstate New York, bringing their passion for hockey and Kevin Smith fandom into the VASHL.
The SModawa 37s sport a bold and unconventional color scheme: dark blue, green, gray, light blue, and white. Their imagery is deeply rooted in View Askew lore, with their jerseys featuring references to Dante Hicks’ legendary reaction in Clerks (“37! In a row?”) and their team mascot, Snowball, tying into another infamous moment from the film. The 37s’ jerseys incorporate sharp contrasts and bold typography, reinforcing their connection to Kevin Smith’s humor and cult fandom. Their distinctive colors and irreverent design choices make them one of the most recognizable teams in VASHL.
One of the most infamous traditions of the SModawa 37s is their relentless chant of “Boardman Sucks!”, a tongue-in-cheek taunt that hilariously contradicts reality. In truth, Keith Boardman is the team’s star player, known for his exceptional skills and game-changing plays, yet his own squad gleefully heckles him as a way of acknowledging his dominance on the rink. What started as a playful jab evolved into a full-fledged tradition, with fans and teammates alike joining in the chorus every time Boardman makes a clutch move.
The SModawa 37s have earned two bronze medals at the Walter Gretzky Street Hockey Tournament, each under unusual circumstances that ultimately reshaped the tournament format. Their first bronze came in 2019, when they faced the Hitmen in the medal match. However, torrential rain made play nearly impossible, leading both teams to mutually agree to call it quits and share the bronze. Meanwhile, the gold medal game between the Yoga Hosers and Mallrats continued despite the downpour, adding to the chaotic nature of the tournament that year. In 2022, the 37s once again found themselves in the bronze medal game, this time against the Salsa Sharks. Though the weather was clear, both teams decided that bronze medal games were pointless, opting instead to split the medals rather than compete. This decision formally ended the practice of bronze medal games in the WGSHT, ensuring that future tournaments would focus solely on gold medal matchups.
With their roots in film and real hockey culture, the SModawa Thirty-Seven’s continue to carve out their place in VASHL history, blending humor and competitive play in the league.
