The Clerks were introduced as an expansion team for the 2014 tournament.
The team name and imagery were based on the 1994 comedy film, Clerks., written and directed by Kevin Smith. As of 2023, the Clerks are tied with the Bethehem Buddies, Eden Prairie Mallrats and the View Askew Vulgarians for the most Walter Gretzky Cup championships (2) won of any VASHL franchise.Clerks was the first of Smith’s View Askewniverse films and the only one to date to be shot entirely in black and white. The film presents a day in the lives of two store clerks and their acquaintances. The team’s logo and jersey design parody the Edmonton Oilers, an NHL team which Smith has well-known affection for. The logo also features an effigy of the Quick Stop Groceries logo, the convenience store where the film takes place. The text with the logo itself is inspired to emulate the shoe polish sign that Dante creates and the beginning of Clerks. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, the Clerks franchise disbanded and is no longer active in VASHL competition. Though they may no longer take to the rink, their legacy lives on, having secured two Walter Gretzky Cup championships and leaving an undeniable mark on league history.

Team History
The Clerks were introduced as an expansion team for the 2014 Walter Gretzky Street Hockey Tournament (WGSHT), bringing a new wave of film-inspired energy to the VASHL community. Founded by Pj Fulsom and other employees of BHi Brantford, the site of the Walter Gretzky Street Hockey Tournament, the team emerged from a simple desire: to be part of the league’s fun and competition. Seeing the VASHL division thrive each year, these staff members created Clerks, adding another memorable franchise to the mix.
The franchise is directly based on Kevin Smith’s 1994 cult classic, Clerks—the first film in the View Askewniverse and the only one shot entirely in black and white.
The Clerks are among the most decorated franchises in the league, tied with the Bethlehem Buddies, Eden Prairie Mallrats, and View Askew Vulgarians for the most Walter Gretzky Cup championships (2 titles) in VASHL history.
The Clerks logo and jersey design pay homage to two defining elements of Kevin Smith’s world:
- Edmonton Oilers Tribute – Smith’s well-known affection for the NHL team is reflected in the team’s colors and design.
- Quick Stop Groceries Effigy – The team logo is a direct nod to the convenience store setting of Clerks.
- Dante’s Shoe Polish Sign – The text elements of the design mimic the DIY style of Dante’s iconic sign from the beginning of the film.
The Clerks are one of the few teams to have won both the Lady Ming Trophy and the Walter Gretzky Cup. They claimed the Lady Ming Trophy in 2019, while also securing Walter Gretzky Cup championships in 2016 and 2017. This makes them one of the VASHL’s most decorated franchises, blending sportsmanship, camaraderie, and championship success—a rare combination that few teams have achieved. Their legacy continues to stand out in VASHL history!
Following the COVID-19 pandemic, the Clerks franchise unfortunately disbanded, and they are no longer an active team in VASHL. Despite their departure, their legacy remains intact as one of the most successful and memorable franchises in league history, having secured two Walter Gretzky Cup championships and brought the spirit of Clerks to the rink.
