Grace’s Tigers (formerly Mooby’s Funployees, and later just Funployees) are an international street hockey team and a proud member club of the VASHL. The franchise began as Mooby’s Funployees and was added as part of the 2010 expansion, which also included the View Askew Girls and the LA Mings. In Kevin Smith’s View Askewinerse, the Funployees are the service staff of Mooby’s fast-food restaurants, featured in Dogma and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and serving as the backdrop to most of Clerks II. Mooby the Golden Calf is a fictional children’s television anthropomorphic cow character, a reference to the Old Testament story of the golden calf worshiped as a graven idol, parodies Barney the dinosaur and elements of Disney. In 2023, the franchise rebranded as Grace’s Tigers—a heartfelt nod to Kevin Smith’s mother, Grace, who affectionately calls Kevin her Tiger. For dedicated Smith fans, this nickname is a well-known part of his personal history, adding an extra layer of meaning to the team’s identity. With its film-inspired origins and family-driven rebranding, Grace’s Tigers remain a standout franchise in the VASHL, blending nostalgia, hockey, and Kevin Smith fandom into one unforgettable team. Team History
The Funployees originated as Mooby’s Funployees, one of three franchises introduced in the 2010 VASHL expansion, alongside the View Askew Girls and the LA Mings. From the start, they embraced unpredictability, facing a series of unique challenges that few other teams encountered. From sweltering jerseys and improvised uniforms to countless roster shakeups—not to mention the infamous hotel incident involving a Flyers t-shirt and a questionable painting technique—the Funployees’ journey was anything but conventional.
Their vibrant aesthetic was deeply embedded in Kevin Smith’s View Askewniverse, taking inspiration from Mooby’s, the fictional fast-food chain featured in Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, and Clerks II. The team adopted Mooby’s purple, yellow, and white branding, with Mooby the Golden Calf serving as their mascot. Their jerseys prominently featured Mooby’s logo, reinforcing their playful yet satirical identity.
While other franchises prioritized stability, the Funployees thrived on constant reinvention, welcoming new players each season and proving that adaptability could be a competitive edge. Though they never reached the finals, they remained a formidable presence in VASHL, especially when bets were on the line. Their camaraderie, humor, and resilience made them one of the league’s most distinctive and beloved teams.
Over the years, the team has been guided by an impressive lineup of dedicated captains, each leaving a lasting mark on the franchise. Tim Lefebvre served as the inaugural captain in 2010, establishing the team’s foundation. In 2011, Richard “Ricky” Lantz stepped in, continuing to shape the Funployees’ presence in VASHL competition. Leadership duties were then shared between Chris F. and Jaemeel Robinson from 2012 to 2014, refining the team’s playing style and approach. Dylan Gonzalez, who captained the team from 2015 to 2019, oversaw a period of significant roster changes, ensuring that the franchise remained competitive despite frequent turnover. After the COVID-19 pandemic, Melissa Chadwick took charge in 2022, providing stability during an era of transition.
In 2023, the Funployees underwent a transformation, rebranding as Grace’s Tigers—a heartfelt tribute to Kevin Smith’s mother, Grace, who affectionately calls Kevin “Tiger.” For longtime View Askew fans, this change carried deep personal significance, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the franchise.
With the rebrand, Grace’s Tigers retained the Funployees’ bold color palette, shifting to purple, orange, and white, creating a striking presence on the rink. Purple represents strength and tradition, orange adds vibrancy and intensity, and white provides a clean contrast. Their new mascot, Kevin the Tiger—a character resembling Kevin Smith himself—reinforces their connection to Kevin’s mother, while embodying the team’s competitive spirit and fierce determination.
As the team transitioned into its new identity, Melissa Chadwick and Jim Edelston became co-captains in 2023, leading Grace’s Tigers into their new era. Together, they continue to shape the franchise’s direction, ensuring that its legacy endures.
Through perseverance, laughter, and an unwavering ability to embrace the unexpected, the Funployees and Grace’s Tigers have carved out a lasting legacy, proving that heart and humor are just as valuable as victory in VASHL.
