Team History
Introduced as an expansion/mashup team for the 2015 Walter Gretzky Street Hockey Tournament (WGSHT), Wally’s Warriors stood out not only for their competitive spirit but also for their dedication to honoring Walter Gretzky’s legacy.
The franchise was founded by Darryl Clarke, bringing together a roster composed of players from various VASHL teams, embodying sportsmanship and unity.
The Wally’s Warriors sported a red, gold, black, and white color scheme, a striking palette that payed homage to the Ottawa Senators. The design reflected their tribute to Walter Gretzky, blending elements of Canadian hockey heritage with VASHL’s unique identity. Their jerseys featured strong red and gold contrasts, mirroring the Senators’ iconic look, while incorporating customized team imagery that reinforces their connection to Walter Gretzky and the Ontario Lung Association.
Despite competing in only one WGSHT tournament, Wally’s Warriors made their mark immediately, securing the Walter Gretzky Cup championship in 2015, an impressive achievement for a newly formed team.
Although their WGSHT appearance was limited to 2015, Wally’s Warriors remained an active presence in VASHL competition, participating in the September Classic from 2016 to 2019, keeping the team’s spirit and tribute alive.
Following the COVID-19 pandemic, Wally’s Warriors became inactive, closing the chapter on a team built on respect, camaraderie, and a shared appreciation for hockey’s greats. Their legacy endures, remembered for their tribute to Walter Gretzky and their championship-winning performance in 2015.
