| The Moose Jaws were an international street hockey team.
They were officially introduced as an expansion team for the 2017 WGSHT tournament. The team is based on Kevin Smith’s announced film of the same name, described as basically “Jaws with a Moose”. It is also a play on the Canadian city of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. In June 2015, Harley Morenstein of Epic Meal Time confirmed he will be the lead in the film. In September 2015, Kevin Smith mentioned that his character Silent Bob will be eaten by the killer moose. In January 2016, Smith confirmed that Jay and Silent Bob will appear in Moose Jaws. In February 2016, Smith revealed that filming on Moose Jaws would start in July 2016 in Saskatchewan, Canada. Although on Hollywood Babble-On, Smith revealed filming was slated to begin in May 2016. As of May 2019, filming on the film has not yet begun. They are also one of the six VASHL franchises that have participated in the Walter Gretzky Street Hockey Tournament, as well as the September Classic. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, the Moose Jaws disbanded, marking the end of their three-year run in VASHL competition. Though no longer active, their legacy lives on, remembered for their spirited play, unique theme, and back-to-back Buddy Christ Memorial Heart Trophy victories. Contents |

Team History
Introduced as an expansion team for the 2017 Walter Gretzky Street Hockey Tournament (WGSHT), the Moose Jaws took their name from Kevin Smith’s announced film of the same name, famously described as “Jaws with a Moose.” The name also serves as a clever nod to the Canadian city of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, further grounding the team in hockey heritage. Despite plans for filming to begin in 2016, the project never moved forward, and as of 2019, no production had officially commenced.
The Moose Jaws were first introduced as one of the theme teams for the 2016 Mainway Mini-Tourney, later appearing in the inaugural September Classic that same year. Their strong presence led to their official addition as a VASHL expansion team for the 2017 WGSHT.
The team was co-founded by longtime Mallrats player Jeff Mader alongside former Ming Colin Johnston, setting the foundation for a competitive three-year run in WGSHT.
The Moose Jaws left their mark on the league by winning the Buddy Christ Memorial Heart Trophy in both 2017 and 2018, a testament to their sportsmanship, spirit, and dedication on the rink.
Following the COVID-19 pandemic, the Moose Jaws disbanded, and Jeff Mader returned to the Mallrats, closing the chapter on one of VASHL’s most creative and uniquely themed franchises.
